Nintendo has announced it is working on a new “dedicated game system” called the NX.

The announcement came as part of a wider announcement that Nintendo will be entering the mobile market for the first time and teaming up with mobile developer DeNA.

Although there isn’t much more information on the “game system”, Nintendo has said it “ maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business,” and that “Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX'," said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

"It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."

The system will tie in with the aforementioned DeNA deal and will take advantage of membership services created in partnership with DeNA; which also has the rights to create games from all Nintendo IP.

"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service," said Iwata.

"Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned."

So what does this mean for the Wii U? Well, it’s unlikely the Wii U will be dropped, and it’s more likely Nintendo will venture into the mobile market, or upgrade the DS family to the NX.

There is a lot of speculation, however the new system, whatever it may be, will have to work in conjunction with the Wii U, especially with IP such as Zelda coming back to the platform, it would be business madness to think the life cycle of the Wii U is done.

So can we expect a phone, or a new handheld device? This seems more than likely given the surrounding context and the partnership with DeNA.

Of course, this is all speculation and we’ve put a call in to Nintendo, we’ll report back with any news as it happens.
