British based Sumo Digital will now develop Deep Silver’s zombie-bashing game, according to the publisher.

Formerly the game had been developed by Yager Studios, the guys behind the fantastically conceived Spec Ops: The Line. Their other titles included Windows space and flight simulator titles.

Eager has said it’s direction and idea of the game had “fallen out of alignment” with publisher Deep Silver’s expectations and is now filing for bankruptcy as a result of the contract being terminated.

The Dead Island franchise has always been a bumpy ride, the original development team from Techland were not signed up to do a sequel, but instead went on to create Dying Light; a spectacular demonstration of RPG zombie madness.

Now Sumo Digital will take the reins and Koch’s head honcho Dr Klemens Kundratitz (Deep Silver’s parent company) has said that he was excited to see what Sumo would do.

"Sumo showed so much understanding of the brand, had creative ideas and an excellent vision that was aligned with our own," he told MCV.

"It just made perfect sense for us to move the project to them. We will reveal more details at a later stage, but for now I'd like to say that we are obviously super excited about the progress that we are making with them."

And Sumo’s COO, Paul Porter said that it was an “honour to be charged with the evolution of such an important franchise” and the studio was confident it will “take bone-crunching, visceral, zombie action to a whole new level”.
