Upcoming fighter Mortal Kombat X is trying to take the series to "a new level", according to senior producer Hans Lo.

The last Mortal Kombat game was released in 2011 and since then NetherRealm Studios has been looking at ways of pushing it even further.

Those ways include innovation and making Mortal Kombat X one of the fastest fighting games out there.

"You're always trying to find new ways of what you can do," Lo told us in a recent interview.

"So for us, one thing we can do in terms of refinement is spending a lot of time focusing on the speed. We have a target of hitting 60 frames-per-second so it has to be a very fast game.

"Honestly, I think this is probably the fastest game we've made in a long time.

"And then comes the innovation side. In the last game we brought in the idea of X-Rays, we've brought them back again but taken them to a whole new level.

"We're really trying to find innovative things that haven't been done before."

Lo added that although bringing in new features was important, NetherRealm also wanted to make something that appealed to hardcore fans of the series.

"It's always going to be tough," he reasoned. "You want to keep the core of what the game is, it's a fighting game.

"If you go too far adding new things at some point it goes to being a simulation instead of a fighting game.

"The whole idea is trying to take it to a new level. To give something new to the gamers, but have something there that is very familiar and very fun and that expands on the experience."

Mortal Kombat X launches in 2015. Look out for our video interview with Hans Lo in the coming weeks.
