Nintendo is contemplating a change in its business structure following the disappointing struggle of the Wii U.

The company could turn to mobile devices to help grow profits, meaning that Nintendo games would be playable on smartphones and tablets for the first time.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained the possible change in a press conference in Osaka.

"Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business," he said [via Bloomberg].

"It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

Iwata also confirmed that serious questions were being asked of the Wii U internally, saying that Nintendo "cannot continue a business without winning".

Sales forecasts for the Wii U were dramatically slashed last week, as Nintendo revised its fiscal 2014 figures from 9 million units sold to 2.8 million.

Nintendo also expects to make an operating loss of $336 million USD.
