Mad Max is the "granddaddy" of wasteland and post-apocalyptic games, according to lead level designer Andreas Gschwari.

The third-person open-world title is heading to current and next-gen consoles in 2014, letting players traverse barren lands in search of resources to survive.

Gschwari believes that other games based on wastelands are "silent homages" to the Mad Max franchise.

"I think many wasteland games or post-apocalyptic games are silent homages to Mad Max," he told ArabicGamers. "I mean Mad Max is the granddaddy of all post-apocalyptic worlds in that sense.

"I think from our point of view the gameplay elements that work really well is we actually have that franchise, so we can draw on some of the elements and some of the key notes from the franchise."

Gschwari then went on to detail some of the key points of gameplay, such as scavenging for resources.

"Resources are scarce in the world, resources are rare. People horde them, people defend them and people die and fight for them.

"So that's something that we really dig into and use to our advantage for our gameplay.

"It takes effort to get that car, then all you do is you scrap it immediately, and the scrap then feeds into your own economy.

"So it's that scarceness of resources that really permeates through all of what we do basically."

A Mad Max film will launch alongside the game next year.
