Ubisoft has officially revealed pirate-themed Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

The latest title in the series will drop players in the Caribbean seas in the 18th Century, as they take control of trained assassin Edward Kenway.

Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin's Creed 3, and he'll come with a wide range of skills to dispatch enemies in several different ways.

Ubisoft promises that Black Flag will feature the sprawling cities that the series is known for, as well as the return of naval action introduced in the last game.

Players will also come across a host of well-known enemies from real life, such as the fearsome Blackbeard, Ben Hornigold and Calico Jack.

Black Flag will feature 50 unique locations for players to sail to whenever they like, with Ubisoft calling it the most varied world yet.

It was also revealed that the present day gameplay would not involve Desmond from previous titles. Instead players will take control of 'themselves' as they do research in Abstergo's lab.

Finally it was confirmed that multiplayer would return with new characters, maps and modes for the pirate theme.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is set for release at the end of 2013, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PC and PlayStation 4.

We'll have much more on Black Flag in the coming days.
