IO Interactive has unveiled the first details for its Hitman project heading to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

The series is apparently going back to its non-linear roots, which will see Agent 47 "using a wide range of tools to take out a diverse group of targets across expansive, exotic locations around the world".

The game is powered by the Glacier 2 engine and IO said it uses "what we have learnt through Hitman: Absolution" as well as taking inspiration from Contracts and Blood Money to create the ultimate Hitman experience.

The new project will also include the largest levels ever seen in a Hitman game.

"We've adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels," added IO.

"Our aim is to create living, breathing and believeable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves."

Contracts Mode will also be making a return, with players able to create and share their own unique missions.

A release date for the new Hitman project has yet to be announced, but more details are set to be revealed later on in the year.
