Another day, another controversy. This time Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is in the spotlight, as a preview for the game has revealed that it looks slightly better on the PlayStation 4 compared its Xbox One cousin.

Apparently even Hideo Kojima is telling press that Sony's machine is the one to use if you want the most visually stunning version. So that means Metal Gear follows Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition as games that perform more impressively on the PS4. Fanboys, unite!

It's certainly a feather in Sony's cap for it to have several third-party games running better on its system, and the PS4 is a wonderful console that has years of amazing gameplay experiences ahead of it. However, resolution isn't everything at this point, and it's certainly not the most important thing when it comes to judging a game's worth.

The Xbox One might be struggling to run third-party games at the resolution or frame rate of the PS4, but that doesn't mean it won't catch up in time. Look at what first-party studio Turn 10 did with Forza 5, creating a beautiful racer at 1080p and 60 frames per second with no trouble at all. Turn 10 would obviously have had developer kits sent out a lot earlier that most other studios so that it could get used to the technology, and that's time that most third-parties didn't have.

If we're still having this conversation a year from now - when studios have spent more than enough time with both consoles - and the Xbox One is still failing to match the PS4 for third-party games, then I'll admit there is a problem somewhere. A problem which Kinect integration probably wouldn't be able to make up for. But until then, these discrepancies aren't the be all and end all for gaming.

Also, for all the talk of frame rates and resolution, I still stand by my statement that Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome is the best looking console game out there. What was Ryse running at? 900p.

Articles about resolution will run and run over the next few months as more games are released, but for now they shouldn't be a factor in determining which console is more successful in years to come. Give third-party studios a chance to get used to both and I guarantee that soon the difference will be minuscule.
