Technology and gadgets in The Division aim to be "stunning and sexy" while also being based on real life, according to executive producer Fredrik Rundqvist.

The MMO third-person shooter is set in a near future where the United States has been wiped out by a deadly disease in just five days.

Being a Tom Clancy game you can expect to come across a lot of advanced devices, however Rundqvist claims everything has been designed after extensive research on real technology.

"It's not that far fetched," he told us when asked about the gadgets in the game. "Most of the technology exists already, it's more the way you visualise it.

"You want it to be stunning and sexy for the gamers so they don't get tired of doing it, but everything we do is based on research and on possibility."

Rundqvist believes that if people saw the kind of technology the military has at its disposal these days, they'd think it was from the future.

"All the stuff that the army and the military is using these days is bordering sci-fi. If you would actually portray it exactly the way it is, people would say it's sci-fi.

"What they understand as current military technology is actually 10-15 year old technology. You always have to balance the current popular idea of military tech and what is real current military tech.

"So there's a trade-off there that's really interesting when you do concepts. You can actually copy things from the real world and people will say you can't use that because it's too sci-fi!"

The Division launches in 2015. Look out for a video interview with Rundqvist in the coming weeks.
