Upcoming adventure title Remember Me was nearly cancelled because it has a female lead character, according to creative director Jean-Max Morris.

Morris said that several publishers turned down Remember Me because they didn't agree with the gender of the main character, Nilin.

The publishers even tried to convince Morris to change Nilin into a male character, but by then they were already too far into development.

"We had some [publishers] that said, 'Well we don't want to publish it because that's not going to succeed,'" he told Penny Arcade.

"'You can't have a female character in games. It has to be a male character, simple as that.'"

Morris said the reasons for having a female lead were because Remember Me's futuristic setting was very much a male-dominated world, and Nilin provides the perfect contrast to that.

"The world we were building was much more about emotion, intimacy, identity and the way technology would intersect those," he added.

"It just felt like the other side of the coin, the yin and the yang, and it just made sense to us that it would be a female character."

Remember Me arrives in stores on 7 June.
